A frenectomy releases a tight band of tissue (a frenum) that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth or the lip to the gum. When this tissue is too tight or short, it can restrict tongue movement, affect speech, make breastfeeding difficult for infants, and even impact breathing and sleep quality.
